Job Shadow Narrative
On Thursday September 1, I job shadowed a counselor named Marcos Reveles at Reagan Elementary. I chose to job shadow a counselor because when I was younger I experienced many family problems at home with my mom being addicted to drugs. I also had a tragic loss when I was younger when my uncle and aunt passed away. I faced depression and had a counselor who would talk with me and was there to hear me out and comfort me. Therefore, I choose to job shadow a counselor because it interest me to talk and comfort kids in there time of need and to let them know everything is going to be okay. At the beginning of my day I asked Mr. Reveles a few questions such as “Do you like your job? Why?” He responded with “yes, because he gets to help kids before they make a mistake and also help them see the bigger picture of a situation.” I also asked him,”What kind of school/training did you have to do” He said,”i had to get my bachelor and masters and also had to get Pupil personnel service credential.” Then, We walked around the school campus checking in the classroom. We also monitored outside when the children had recess. After break there was an incident where two young girl wanted to fight each other then we had to solve there problem to make sure the girls were safe on campus and prevent them from fighting. We also played basketball with a group of kids on campus. Then, We had lunch and I had took off. I’ve learned that being a counselor you have to take every problem serious whether it’s big or small to prevent anything bad from happening.I enjoyed talking to the girls and prevented them from fighting so both girls can feel safe and secure at school. I like to work with kids with troubled situations. I also learned when we were playing basketball with the group of student how some of them were insecure about themselves and other were all about themselves hogging the basketball and not passing it to their team so, you have to show them how to be a team player and make sure everyone participates. As a counselor you have to make sure everyone is safe, secure, and happy. I learned that having a person to talk to and making you feel safe has a huge impact on one’s life. At the end of the day, I felt myself interested in this job because I enjoy helping out people and especially kids because I can relate to most kids in counseling and also help them before they make a mistake and see the bigger picture in life. I also want to be there and let kids know that there is someone you can go talk to and feel safe and secure. There isn’t anything I don’t like about this job it has good pay and you get to interact with kids. I personally went through counseling myself when i was younger and I enjoyed having someone to talk to letting me know everything's going to be okay. |
